Welcome back to Term 3, Odyssey Cave. I hope you have all had a fabulous holiday and are ready for another term of learning and fun. Weeks 1 to 6 we are taking part in the Library Reading Programme called "Chill out and read." Our beginning Maths strand will be Measurement with a focus on Time and Area, followed by Number and Algebra, and towards the end of the term, Geometry with a focus on Shape and Transformation. For Written Language our focus is Report Writing which will help guide our Inquiry research skills. Empowerment is the school value we will be working towards this term. It is one of our GREAT school values and together we will discuss what this looks like, sounds like, and means to us as individuals, as a class and as a school. We have our Merit Assembly in Week 3 this term starting at 2:15pm. It's a time to celebrate our learning and we would love to share this with family and friends. The children have a small amount of homework to do each week, consisting of reading, spelling and maths revision. Please encourage your child to be responsible for their own learning. We will be studying an artist, exploring aspects of his style, and we will have fun making music together playing various instruments.
Here's to another GREAT term! Kind regards,
Jose' McGoverne
Term 2 2020 Kia ora koutou and a very warm welcome back to you all after a lengthy time away. The children certainly have had varied experiences during "Lockdown" but have returned to school bright and happy. Thank you for all your fabulous support in teaching your children at home, on top of everything else you do! It was very much appreciated.
The focus for this term is "Change." The children have chosen their Inquiry topic and are now busily researching a question they would like answered. We are all sharing our knowledge and learning interesting facts from each other about all sorts of things! For instance, the first commercial electric washing machine was introduced in 1908 and before that they were hand powered. It was called a Thor. And some butterflies can live up to just one week or up to one year, depending on the species. Fascinating!
Writing - We are learning to use persuasive writing. We know that we need to convince the reader by using persuasive language, stating what we believe strongly, giving three reasons why and adding examples. Maths - Number knowledge and strategies, in both addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division. Daily maintenance games of multiplication Bingo and Salute which can easily be played at home - just ask your child to teach you how! Fractions in weeks 8-10. Reading - Daily guided reading groups. The Reading Box for independent reading at the childrens' individual working level. The library is made use of weekly, which the children are really enjoying. Thank you Maxine for making this happen! Spelling - The children are working on Essential List words and are buddy tested in the class during the week. Fridays is test day! Please support your child's home learning by listening to reading, helping with some math problems and testing spelling words.
We would like to say a HUGE thank-you to Mrs Cheer who has knitted the whole school some beautiful, warm slippers for inside the classroom. They are fantastic and we are very grateful.
